MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
|
| |
As most of you know, we have been working on reworking the campus master plan for the past few
|
years, and most parents have had the opportunity to see some of the renderings of the new campus either at the annual dinner or in the Reporter last spring. I am excited to announce that the response to the plans has been profoundly positive, and as of today we plan on breaking ground on the new facilities before the end of the 2011-12 school year! There is still much design work to do and a significant amount of money to be raised, so we will be holding a number of events throughout the school year to share the most updated plans with our families and to ask for your support, but in the meantime, please click here to see what our plans include.
While the buildings will be beautiful and the facilities will be first rate, I have often said that I am most excited about what we are going to be doing in them. And more importantly, I get excited about the kids and faculty that will be in them!
That excitement comes from the unbelievably good feeling I receive each morning stepping to the podium at assembly. It really is a treat to be in an auditorium with 600 kids who truly seem excited about coming to school everyday. No doubt you have heard from your kids about the various pep rallies and performances in assembly, but what you may not hear from them is many of the talks we have as a community. Continue reading

The Howard Stamper Library regularly adds books of interest for all members of the community. As a JBS parent, you have borrowing privileges, and the library staff invites and encourages you to visit, browse and check out books. As a way to pique your interest, the library will frequently update a list of new titles on its web page, and a librarian or library volunteer will review one or two recent book acquisitions in each Parent Newsletter. First up is a review of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad
by Jennifer Egan. If you have questions or puchasing suggestions, contact Linda Mercer. For a complete list of new materials, visit the online catalog.

Embrace volunteering at Burroughs.
Student body president Vince Vance greeted students the first day of school by heralding 2011-12 as the year of the embrace (embrace fun, opportunity, etc.). Parents can follow suit by joining in on the wide variety of volunteer opportunities the Parents Council offers. We hope you’ll find it easy and fun to get involved with activities that support the administration, faculty and staff here at Burroughs.
Our mission to support the school inspires every Parents Council undertaking. During our first meeting of the year on September 7, the Parents Council Board unanimously approved a capital gift of $250,000 over the next five years toward the new master plan. With this vote, board members sent a strong message of support for a plan that will enhance our community tremendously and touch every student’s life in so many positive ways.
On the volunteer front, the Parents Council offers many opportunities for parents to get involved over the next few weeks:
-
All are welcome at Unique Boutique Signatures crafting sessions. On-the-job training provided.
-
Help The Producers committee with set building, PR, concessions and ushering for the fall play. This is a great opportunity for arts enthusiasts and working parents.
-
Sift through donations to our 500-family garage sale during Potpourri sorts—a great way to meet other parents. Drop in, no sign-up necessary.
-
Help plan the popular International Dinner in March. The first committee meeting is at 11 am, Friday, September 30, in the Haertter Hall conference room. Food enthusiasts, this one’s for you!
Many of our most dedicated volunteers say that the best part of donating time to their child's school is that they get to know their student's teachers and friends, they connect with other parents and they see the school in action. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. The sooner, the better.
—Dorothy Swicord, president
