MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
|
| |
Contemporary artist Tom Friedman ’83 said his work has been described as having a Midwestern work ethic because it can be extremely labor-intensive.
|
But he said it's really a Burroughs work ethic. I think Tom is onto something.
Within the last week, students turned in their schedule cards and selected leadership for next school year. Tom, who is this year's Outstanding Alumnus, spent a day on campus, chatting with students about his art — and theirs. More than 600 student athletes came to campus to compete in the 11th annual Skippy Keefer Relays. (Our girls took fourth place, the boys took third). Juniors held nothing back in organizing the first under-the-stars (actually under-the-tent) prom, and virtually 100 percent of the juniors and seniors attended.
Every year when we return from spring break, we hit the ground running and don't seem to catch our breath until after graduation. And it only gets busier from here. Ten weeks packed to capacity. We are a talented and motivated community — students, faculty and parents — determined to make every spring even better than the one before. Continue reading

Annual Dinner and Auction
Enjoy an evening with friends and bid on some amazing silent auction items at the JBS Annual Dinner and Auction at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 30 in the field house. Burrroughs is hosting 10 students and their teachers from its sister school, Ferdinand Porsche Gymnasium in Stuttgart, Germany, through April 23. The 23-year exchange program brings a group of students to St. Louis to stay with Burroughs families and attend JBS classes with their host siblings. Next year, Ferdinand Porsche Gymnasium will host a group of Burroughs students in Germany.

The JBS community is snapping up tickets to sit in Bomberland at the April 22 Cards vs. Reds game (7:15 pm). If you want to join the group, purchase your tickets ($20) in the bookstore as soon as possible. The Bomber community's support of this activity earns the baseball team the privilege of playing against MICDS at Busch on May 1 (1 pm). That game is free. For more information about either of these events, contact Peter Tasker.

Burroughs traditionally presents a scrapbook of letters and remembrances to retiring faculty and staff at the end of the school year. All members of the JBS community are invited to contribute a message for any of the 2011 retirees — Jim Lemen (43 years), Rebecca Richardson (27 years), Pam Miles (24 years), Todd Small (24 years), Emily Younger (21 years) and Judy Small (18 years). If you would like to include a note, please send it to Ellen Bremner.

Potpourri is finally here with some new features you need to know about.
The first of the "new" is an advance silent auction of four of the best items from the Best of Everything. All members of the Burroughs community have an equal opportunity to claim them as their own with online silent bidding. The items selected are a woman's mink jacket from Saks Fifth Avenue, an international stamp album with many stamps, a Stan Musial signed baseball and the new Busch Stadium's opening day commemorative stamped envelopes, and a U.S. 2006 American Eagle silver dollar (1 ounce fine silver).
The Potpourri Committee came up with the second initiative in the hope of making the pre-sale a more manageable event. The presale is intended to be a "thank you" to members of the JBS community who support the event with donations of merchandise and a commitment of their time. In order to limit pre-sale admissions to members of the JBS community (current students, their parents and siblings, as well as faculty, staff and alumni), the school will mail two identification bracelets to every home in advance. EVERY ADULT SHOPPER WILL BE REQUIRED TO WEAR A BRACELET ON THE DAY OF THE SALE. Bracelets will be mailed to parents/guardians of current students on Saturday, April 16.
Move-in day on Saturday (April 16) officially marks the beginning of the week's events. We're confident that we will be blessed with many hard-working volunteers who will help us transform the field house from empty to full in just a few hours. Come at 6:30 a.m. or whenever you can make it. The Parents Council invites you back throughout the week to help with the many events on campus. This is a JBS tradition you have to see to believe. Just ask your kids. Continue reading for more about Potpourri events throughout the week, the Annual Dinner and Auction and Family Network programs.
