AWARDS + RECOGNITION

Okay...we don't do this very often, but we thought we'd toot our horn a little bit and let you know about some recent awards and recognition.  At the Mayor's Annual Business Luncheon on October 9th, the St. Louis Development Corporation and Mayor Francis G. Slay awarded Centro the 2009 "Neighborhood Business Of The Year" award for the Central West End.  Immediately on the heels of that honor, readers of St. Louis AT HOME Magazine voted Centro the "Best Modern Furniture Store"  in the NOV / DEC 2009 issue (on stands now!).  Shout-outs also go to Studio Durham Architects, Julie Abner Interiors, and Gunn & Smith Architects, who included furnishings from Centro in their winning "2009 Architect & Design Awards" in the same issue.

For the third consecutive year (which we suppose makes it an official annual Holiday tradition), Centro has installed the Product Runway, a thirty-four-foot-long table displaying classic, whimsical, and functional gift ideas for all budgets, from manufacturers including Alessi, iittala, and Driade. While walking off their jetlag on the Monday before the Milan Furniture Fair in 1999, Centro co-owners Ginny Stewart and Todd Lannom wandered into the British Council on Via Manzoni for a sneak preview of an exhibit by British newcomer Tom Dixon, scheduled to open two days later in conjunction with the Fair.  While there, they ran into a tall, slim man who enthusiastically described the processes used to manufacturer the JACK and BUCKY designs he was excitedly arranging for the installation.  Further into the conversation, and only after Todd and Ginny introduced themselves, the knowledgeable person announced he was Tom Dixon himself.

While JACK and BUCKY have moved into the realm of "collector" items, Tom has not stopped surprising the design world with his use of simple, honest materials in pleasingly functional ways.  After moonlighting as artistic director for the venerable Finnish company Artek, manufacturer of Alvar Aalto's designs for over 70 years, Tom Dixon (the man) has focused on building the collections produced by Tom Dixon (the company), several designs of which are now on display at Centro.
